Christmas is a time when Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a season of joy, love, and hope, as believers reflect on the miraculous events that took place in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago. One of the biblical accounts that beautifully narrates the birth of Jesus is found in the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples and an eyewitness to many of His teachings and miracles, opens his gospel with a genealogy tracing Jesus’ lineage all the way back to King David and Abraham. This genealogy establishes Jesus’ rightful claim to the throne of Israel as the long-awaited Messiah. It also highlights the fact that Jesus’ birth was not a random event but one that was intricately woven into the tapestry of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
After providing the lineage, Matthew focuses on the unexpected circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. He writes about Joseph, a righteous man engaged to Mary, who discovers that she is pregnant before their marriage is consummated. Troubled and unsure about what to do, Joseph considers quietly divorcing Mary to avoid public shame.
But in a dream, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph, assuring him that Mary’s pregnancy is indeed from the Holy Spirit and that she will give birth to a son. The angel instructs Joseph to name the child Jesus, which means “God saves,” emphasizing His purpose to save people from their sins. Matthew affirms that this event fulfills the prophecy spoken by Isaiah: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name ‘Immanuel’ (which means, God with us)” (Matthew 1:23).
Embracing his divine calling, Joseph takes Mary as his wife and becomes a faithful guardian of Jesus. Matthew’s account highlights Joseph’s obedience and willingness to trust in God’s plan, even when it seemed beyond human comprehension.
As the narrative progresses, Matthew introduces the visit of the Magi, wise men from the east who followed a star that led them to the young Jesus. These Magi, guided by prophecy and divine intervention, present Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These offerings symbolize Jesus’ kingship, divinity, and sacrificial death, foreshadowing His mission on earth.
Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus in chapter 1 illuminates the profound significance of Christmas. It reveals that Jesus’ arrival was not just a joyous occasion for shepherds and Magi; it was the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior who would reconcile humanity to Himself. The birth of Jesus demonstrates God’s unconditional love, grace, and mercy, as well as His desire to dwell among His people.
During the Christmas season, may we reflect on Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus and allow it to deepen our understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. It is a story of redemption, hope, and the incredible love that God has for all of humanity. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us also embrace His message of salvation and extend love and kindness to those around us, following in the footsteps of the One whose birth we commemorate.
